{"id":1811,"date":"2017-10-20T17:56:04","date_gmt":"2017-10-20T15:56:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/themanual.local\/?p=1811"},"modified":"2023-09-16T03:38:37","modified_gmt":"2023-09-16T01:38:37","slug":"using-apple-preview-resize-photos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/simonbarnett.co.za\/themanual\/using-apple-preview-resize-photos\/","title":{"rendered":"Using Apple Preview to resize your photos"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\t<p>If you have a Mac, then you don&#8217;t need Photoshop to prepare your photos for the web.<\/p>\n<p>You can use the built-in Photos app or the Preview app, which is the one covered here.<\/p>\n<p>In this quick tutorial, we&#8217;re going to resize and convert some photos of different widths in .TIFF format to .JPGs with equal widths.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>I use \u2318 symbol for the cmd (command) key, and the \u2325 symbol for the option (aka alt) key.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tip<\/strong>: You can see the size of an image by selecting it, then typing\u00a0\u2318i.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/simonbarnett.co.za\/themanual\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/2.-Select-a-pic.avif\" alt=\"\" width=\"318\" height=\"330\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/simonbarnett.co.za\/themanual\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/3.-Get-info.avif\" alt=\"\" width=\"367\" height=\"711\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Note that\u00a0Preview is &#8220;trigger happy&#8221;.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Anything you do is live, ie. it is saved immediately. So preferably duplicate the photos you intend to work on by selecting them or their containing folder, and typing\u00a0\u2318d.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s begin..<\/p>\n\t<p>Open the photos in Preview.<\/p>\n<p>They should be of the same format. Sometimes Preview will split different format into groups, each with its own window.<\/p>\nDrag over the photos in the sidebar to select them all.<br \/>\nOr click in the sidebar to (invisibly) move the focus there, then type \u2318a.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/simonbarnett.co.za\/themanual\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/4.-Open-in-Preview.avif\" alt=\"\" width=\"673\" height=\"449\" \/>\n\tGo to the Tools menu, and select Adjust Size&#8230;<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/simonbarnett.co.za\/themanual\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/5.-Tools-Adjust-size.avif\" alt=\"\" width=\"243\" height=\"420\" \/>\n\tEnter the size:<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/simonbarnett.co.za\/themanual\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/6.-Change-size.avif\" alt=\"\" width=\"731\" height=\"516\" \/>\n\tGo to the File menu and Export Selected Images&#8230;<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/simonbarnett.co.za\/themanual\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/7.-File-Export-Selected-images.avif\" alt=\"\" width=\"274\" height=\"440\" \/>\n\t<p>In the save dialogue box, click Options near the bottom left.<\/p>\nSelect the file format. If JPEG, then make sure they are at a reasonably high quality setting:<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/simonbarnett.co.za\/themanual\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/8.-Options-Jpeg.avif\" alt=\"\" width=\"820\" height=\"500\" \/><br \/>\nChoose the destination to save them in.\n\t<p>Technically we&#8217;re done at this point, but this last step is a must.<\/p>\n<p>Get a copy of <a href=\"https:\/\/imageoptim.com\/mac\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ImageOptim<\/a>, and install it.
